Tutorial: Base Paints

Base paints are an essential part of any miniature painting process, as they provide a solid foundation for your models, ensuring that subsequent layers of paint adhere properly and that the colors appear vibrant.

How to Use Base Paints:

1. Preparation:

   • Before applying any paint, ensure that your model is clean and primed. Priming helps paint adhere to the surface and enhances the colors' vibrancy.
   • For base paints, a neutral or light primer, such as grey or white, will help your base colors pop, especially if you're painting lighter shades.

2. Application:

   • Shake the Pot: Always shake your base paint thoroughly before use to ensure an even consistency.
   • Load Your Brush: Use a large, flat brush (Citadel Base or similar) to load the paint. Make sure to load the brush lightly to avoid over-applying paint.
   • Apply Even Coats: Start applying the paint in smooth, controlled strokes. Base paints often cover well in one or two thin layers, but multiple thin layers work better than one thick layer to avoid streaks or clumping.
   • Cover the Model: Apply the base paint to the larger areas first, then work your way to the smaller sections or details. Don’t worry if it’s not perfect, as you’ll be adding more layers of detail afterward.

3. Drying:

   • Allow each coat of base paint to dry completely before applying additional layers. Drying times may vary, but generally, base paints dry relatively quickly.

4. After Application:

   • Once your base coat is dry, you can proceed with painting additional layers, such as highlighting, shading, or applying washes.

Tips for Best Results:

• Thin Layers: If you need to apply a second coat, ensure the first layer is dry and apply the second coat thinly for a smooth finish.
• Use a Dry Palette: This helps control how much paint you load onto your brush, ensuring you don’t use too much at once.
• Clean Your Brush: Make sure to clean your brush between different colors to prevent mixing and muddying your paints.
