Tutorial: Metallics

Metallic paints are specially formulated to give your miniatures a realistic, shiny finish, simulating metals like gold, silver, bronze, or steel. These paints are perfect for adding armor, weapons, and other metallic elements to your models.

How to Use Metallics:

1. Preparation:

   • Just like with base paints, you should prime your miniature before applying metallic paints. A light grey or black primer can help metallics stand out more vividly, depending on the desired effect.

2. Application:

   • Shake well: Metallic paints often separate over time, so make sure to shake the pot thoroughly before use.
   • Load your brush: Use a good-quality brush (a Citadel Base or Layer brush works well for detailed areas), and lightly load it with paint. Be careful not to overload your brush to avoid thick, messy application.
   • Apply the paint: Use smooth strokes to apply the metallic paint. Metallics tend to have a more noticeable texture, so try to apply a thin, even layer to avoid clumping.
   • Layering: If you need more opacity or a richer shine, apply a second coat after the first one has dried completely.

3. Drying:

   • Allow each coat of metallic paint to dry fully before adding additional layers. This prevents smudging and ensures a clean, smooth metallic surface.

4. After Application:

   • Once your metallic elements are painted, you can enhance them further using washes to add shading or highlights for added depth and contrast.

Tips:

• Thin Layers: Apply thin layers of metallic paint to avoid a "clumpy" look. Metallics can sometimes appear uneven if applied too thickly.
• Dry Brushing: After the base metallic color is on, dry brushing with a lighter metallic paint can enhance the highlights and add realism to your miniatures.
• Avoid Over-Wetting the Brush: Metallic paints work best with controlled application, so avoid getting too much paint on your brush to prevent unwanted streaks.
